Michelangelo, Personal Training, and Crazy People

More thoughts on body sculpting:

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. --Michelangelo

In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.  --Michelangelo

I know there is an angel inside me; I must chisel away with exercise until I find her. My "lovely apparition" is imprisoned in rough walls of fat and cellulite that I am painstakingly working to get off.

How long do you suppose it took Michelangelo to carve such a beautiful statue?

This angel is not Michelangelo's work. It's from an ad I saw for a garden statue. The instructions say that she must be sealed with polyurethane at least once a year or she will deteriorate. My body is like that; I left it unattended for too long and it started deteriorating. It will take a while before I get it back to beauty.

She caught my attention because she is weeping. Sometimes we must go through pain to attain the greater good. My legs hurt after Tuesday but they will heal and become stronger.

I was the only one at sculpting class today, so I got a personal training session at no extra cost.

I was talking about my last blog entry and the comments I received, and my young, slim, attractive, son said the only people who feel like they "fit" in a gym are the ones who work out, like, 80 hours a week. They are crazy. (The rest of us just fake it, I guess.)

  1. Ding ding ding ding! You've just hit the rec therapist side of me! Personally, I think there's something wrong if you have to "fake it." I mean, it's one thing if you really WANT to be at a gym, and you enjoy actually being there. It's another thing entirely if you're stressed out when you're there. It seems to me that if that's the case, your body goes into fight or flight mode and will hang on to any survival measures it can... including fat!

Granted, there is something to be said for sticking it out and learning to be comfortable there... and kudos to you if you can do it! I think I just like multitasking. I'd like to have fun while I'm working out. Either that, or accomplishing something else that needs to be done. I don't have enough life to spend doing too many things I don't enjoy!

At the same time, a personal training session is a good thing... Sixes, guess. :)

Sorry this comment is so long! You happened to hit my soap box issue. :)

  2. I think you have a really good point. I kind of like going to the gym now--it's a friendly place, a bit of social activity--and I am good at keeping the commitment.

I know I could be gardening, or painting, or washing my house, but I like the fact that I get a really balanced workout at the gym. Also, somehow, I stick to this commitment better than any commitment I've ever made to housecleaning. I don't know why.

I always feel better for having done it; it really helps my self-confidence, so maybe that's what it's all about for me.

  3. Well, then, kudos to you! You're getting a very valuable payoff, both emotionally and physically, for going to the gym. That's exactly what you should be getting from exercise in order to get the most from it. You're amazing, and good luck with the rest of your journey!
